Joe's Donuts: A Sandy, Oregon gem worth the drive

By Lisa Hinkle, Realtor · · 4 min read

One of the best parts of living and working in Sandy is getting to share the places that make this community so special. And when folks ask me where to grab a bite on the way to Mount Hood, there is one answer I give every time: Joe's Donuts.

This is not a fancy chain or a trendy pop-up. Joe's is the real deal — a honest, old-school donut shop that has been serving this community since 1974. That is over 50 years of early mornings, fresh coffee, and the kind of donuts that ruin you for grocery store pastries forever.

A little history

Joe's Donuts was founded in 1974 by a young man named Joe, who opened the shop right out of high school. Imagine starting a business at that age and watching it grow into a nationally recognized destination — that is the kind of determination you find in small-town Oregon. Over the decades, Joe's has become a beloved community staple and a must-stop for travelers heading up to Mount Hood or cruising the scenic byways of Clackamas County.

What started as a small local shop has earned a reputation that reaches far beyond Sandy. People drive from Portland, from Gresham, from all over the region, just for a box of these donuts. And once you have tried them, you will understand why.

What to order

If you are making your first visit, let me point you in the right direction. The apple fritter is legendary — crispy on the outside, tender and full of cinnamon-spiced apple on the inside, and about the size of your face. It is the kind of pastry that makes you close your eyes while you eat it.

The maple bacon bar is another standout. The sweet maple glaze with the salty bacon on top is a combination that just works. It is a favorite for a reason.

And of course, you cannot visit Joe's without a cup of their coffee. They serve Mt. Hood Roasters Coffee in all their drinks, which pairs perfectly with whatever pastry you choose. There is something about that first sip of local coffee alongside a warm donut on a cool Oregon morning.

Local tip

Go early. Joe's opens early and the best selection is in the morning. By midday, the most popular varieties are often gone. And if you are heading up to Mount Hood for a ski day or a hike, this is the perfect place to grab breakfast on the way.

More than a donut shop

What I love most about Joe's is what it represents. It is a family-run business that has weathered five decades of change. It has seen this town grow, welcomed generations of families, and remained a constant, friendly face on the corner of Highway 211 and Pioneer Boulevard.

When I help clients find a home in Sandy, I always tell them about the places that make this town feel like home. Joe's Donuts is at the top of that list. It is the kind of place where the staff remembers your order, where the coffee is always hot, and where the donuts are made fresh every single day.

Plan your visit

Address: Joe's Donuts, corner of Hwy 211 and Pioneer Blvd (Hwy 26), Sandy, Oregon
Best time to go: Early morning for the freshest selection
Must try: Apple fritter, maple bacon bar, and a cup of Mt. Hood Roasters coffee

Whether you are a longtime local or just passing through on your way to the mountain, make the stop. Grab a dozen mixed. Sit for a minute and soak in the small-town Oregon charm. And if you see me there, say hi — I am probably in line for an apple fritter.

The bottom line

Joe's Donuts has been a Sandy institution since 1974. Fresh donuts, local coffee, and the kind of warm service that makes you feel like a regular on your first visit. Do not pass through Sandy without stopping.
